Hank Ehrenfried: Look Out!
These seventeen drawings by Brooklyn-based artist Hank Ehrenfried were completed during the statewide stay-at-home order issued in response to COVID-19. All are drawn from photographs taken before the age of social distancing; images which take on a strange new poignancy in these uncertain times. The artist writes…
We are all faced with the possibility of a future that looks unlike anything we could ever imagine ourselves in. At its most violent and uncompromising, this future would hold no place for us at all. Meanwhile the repetitiveness of each day disrupts the continuity of the present, which now appears in an impossible, bizarre technicolor. In a world that has been ordered to stand still, all feels disorganized and uninhabitable.
For Ehrenfried, these drawings are a means of organizing the time shortly before we were all asked to pause. In this uncertain present, the clarity and familiarity of this immediate past is special, but the world as it was may simply be without use for us now, despite how clearly it remains in our memory.
